About the Artist:
Marshall Mitchell (January 29, 1917 – March 9, 2001) was a local self-employed artist and sculptor, living and working in his Pleasant Plains, Illinois, home until his death. Mitchell won national recognition as a bronze sculptor creating works of art similar to that of Western artist Frederic Remington and Midwesterner Wally Shoop. Mitchell’s works have been exhibited in galleries throughout the U.S. One of his larger bronzes “Out of the Wilderness,” completed in 1991, depicts Abraham Lincoln astride a horse and is prominently situated inside the visitors’ center at Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site located south of Petersburg, Illinois.
